The Sunday Best is a collection of articles I’ve curated from the furthest reaches of the internet for your reading pleasure.
Every week, I scan hundreds of headlines, read dozens of posts, and bring you the best of the best to save you time and mental energy.
Financial Independence (FI) is a primary focus, but it’s an awfully broad topic. I tend to approach FI and early retirement from a fatFIRE perspective and through the lens of a physician, so expect to see those biases in the selected articles.
Related topics that have become recurrent themes include early retirement, selective frugality, tax issues, travel, physician issues, and of course, investing.

Home Improvement
I haven’t been this busy since I had a real job!
As you may know, my wife and I closed on a new house two weeks ago. It’s a lovely mid-century ranch with one previous owner for the last 60 years.
The good news is that the house has had some updates. The bad news is that the most recent updates were in the mid-1990s.
The great news is that there’s over 1,000 square feet of beautiful hardwood flooring in great shape that’s been protected by carpet for decades. We’ve got a father and son team working through the weekend to sand and refinish it with four coats of a water-based finish.
They’re not the only ones working on the place. My kids pulled hundreds of staples from those floors, staples that once held down the carpet pad.
My wife, with a little help from her aunt and me, has declared war on wallpaper, and every scrap of it (and its glue) in the living room, dining room, and kitchen has been removed and replaced with a coat of primer and two fresh coats of paint.
I spent more time than I should have installing, uninstalling, then properly reinstalling vinyl plank flooring in a basement room that will soon be our boys’ toy (mostly Lego) room. They’re excited for that.
There’s still so much we plan to do, and I expect we’ll be working on this home in some way, shape, or form for as long as we own it. It’s going to be great, though!
You can follow my Instagram account for more updates on our home improvement projects and FIRE life, in general.

I’m not surprised that you bought a bigger home base but I am very surprised that you’re selling the lake cottage too! Why did you decide not to hang onto it? It seemed like a lifestyle you really enjoyed.
The lake cottage seems superfluous when we have our own acre on the lake now. We can put in a dock, have our boat, and in 2-3 years at the most, we’ll be building a new home on that side of the street.
Cheers!

Aaah I missed that the new place has its own lakefront, it was a lifestyle change I couldn’t compute given how central it’s been in your past posts. With my curiosity satisfied I’ll just sit here quietly nursing my coffee – and my jealousy. 😉
I may have mentioned it in a previous Sunday Best — if you look back a week or two or follow my Instagram account, you’ll see our RV parked on the water. We’ve got just about an acre with 140′ of frontage in a great little neighborhood on the lake.
Enjoy your coffee!

Hey, thanks for another great Sunday Best Pof! And great job on that floor! Your boys are going to love it!
Thanks for sharing out post this week. A great list of articles today. I am impressed with the $40K USD of annual travel. We have $10K-$15K right now in our budget but I am feeling the need to step it up a bit more!
You don’t necessarily have to spend a lot to travel large.
We booked 1-way flights to Tokyo for $87 apiece on American Airlines. Scott’s Cheap flights (https://www.physicianonfire.com/flights) alerted us to that amazing deal. Could have flown round trip for $202, but we plan to cruise back (which we were supposed to be doing right now if it weren’t for COVID).
Cheers! And congrats on 2 years of FIRE together.

Hey that floor doesn’t look bad! Loved the side hustle article from Joe that I missed earlier this week. I can be a little penny foolish when it comes to chasing side hustles, but I guess that’s part of the fun in making “extra” money. For most side hustles, if you don’t enjoy it, it’s probably not worth your time alone. Great list as always!
Maybe I could have a side hustle installing vinyl plank flooring? 😉
It’s always more satisfying to me when I’m getting work done to improve my home, rather than for money, though.
Cheers!
