The Sunday Best (06/12/2022)

The_Sunday_Best_2021

The Sunday Best is a collection of articles I’ve curated from the furthest reaches of the internet for your reading pleasure.

Every week, I scan hundreds of headlines, read dozens of posts, and bring you the best of the best to save you time and mental energy.

Financial Independence (FI) is a primary focus, but it’s an awfully broad topic. I tend to approach FI and early retirement from a fatFIRE perspective and through the lens of a physician, so expect to see those biases in the selected articles.

Related topics that have become recurrent themes include early retirement, selective frugality, tax issues, travel, physician issues, and of course, investing.

For more great articles, take a peek at The Sunday Best Archives. Now let’s get to the best… The Sunday Best!

FU, MD. Sorry… make that MDFU!

When I was a student, Fairview Health partnered with the University of Minnesota to create Fairview University Medical Center, or FUMC. They actually used that name for a short while before realizing their folly and changing the name from FUMC to University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.

I thought that The Physician Philosopher had made a similar gaffe with Medical Degree Financial University, or MDFU.

However, it turns out that the idea behind the soon-to-be-released membership community is that it offers a path to help young MDs obtain “FU money,” so it actually makes good sense.

To introduce the program, Dr. James Turner is offering some free education this week, and it comes with a free downloadable companion Financial Freedom Workbook.

The teaching will take place on June 14th and June 16th. (Don’t worry, if you cannot make one of the days, we will provide a recording to those who sign up).

What you’ll learn:

  • How to Create Positive Cash Flow.
  • The Two Golden Rules that helped Dr. Turner pay off $300,000 in student loan debt and increase his family’s net worth by $500,000 in 30 months after he finished training!
  • The physician specific process (10 steps) for when to pay down debt versus invest.
  • Resources doctors have to learn more about personal finance.
  • The psychology of money (and why this matters more than knowing how to invest)

[Half] Marathon Training

In the past, I’ve stated my intention to run a marathon, only to have foot and knee issues and most races canceled due to the pandemic. I’m happy to say I’m back in the game, at least for now.

My wife signed us up for a half marathon in August, and we’re in week three of Peloton’s 26.2 Mile training program, which consists of 4 runs and 2 30-minute strength training sessions each week.

I hope my legs hold up well enough to continue training through the summer for a possible early fall full marathon. In the meantime, just a few weeks in, I can see the impact of sustained cardiovascular work on my body as my resting heart rate has plummeted to the mid-forties, a solid 10 beats per minute below where it’s been for most of the last year.

Heart-Rate-45-360

I love my Garmin Instinct watch and the companion Garmin Connect app that gives me all sorts of data on my sleep, steps, heart rate that I didn’t have until I picked up the watch a year and a half ago. It’s also a great GPS watch for runners, displaying my distance, pace, mileage, and heart rate all at once.

If anyone has a recommendation for a September or October marathon in the midwest, let me know in the comments!

DLP2021 was an outstanding year for investors in site sponsor DLP’s Housing Fund, and 2022 is off to a strong start!

The fund’s valuation was updated to a 22.25% positive NAV adjustment, representing a 2021 net return to investors to 45.57% for the calendar year 2021. That’s just one of a handful of funds they have to offer the accredited investor.

DLP Capital also puts on some outstanding events, a couple of which my wife and I have attended. You can join them at the next one in a couple weeks, either in-person or virtually, to learn more about the funds, their performance history, and the latest earnings reports.

If you’d like to learn more DLP’s purpose-driven path and their five private real estate funds , join them online or in person for the complimentary DLP Capital Dinner which will be held at the new DLP Plaza in Allentown, PA on June 23rd. To register, click here.

Our House Sold for $1.1 Million

Our “forever home” that we had built in 2007-2008 for a total cost of $670,000 just sold. And it sold for $1.1 Million!

The bad news is that is was no longer ours. We parted with it in 2015 for $450,000. When it comes to housing, I am the worst market timer.

To be fair, the second owners of the home did put on an addition to the garage and upstairs, remodeled the kitchen, improved the shoreline, and added an outbuilding. I’m guessing they put several hundred thousand dollars into the property. Still, I imagine they came out ahead. I’m glad somebody made money on this place; it really is a beautiful waterfront home.

forever home

Inexplicably, we’ve decided to build on the water again and we’re doing it when the cost per square foot has roughly tripled since our first custom home, pictured above, was built 15 years ago.

This time, our ability to stay in the home cannot be thwarted by a hospital going bankrupt, leaving me jobless with no local prospects. This time, we can stay as long as we please. A huge benefit of financial independence is location independence and the complete lack of salary dependence.

  1. Good luck on your half marathon training PoF! I wish I still had the knees to run like that!

That waterfront home of yours (well, used to be yours) sure is a beaut! And, at 1.1 million it seems like a total bargain compared to real estate prices here. Where I live, a house like that might go for $4 or $5 million.

    It seems amazingly affordable!

  3. Did the marathon training program for peloton for my most recent half and matched my PR from 10 years ago. Great program.

    • That’s cool to hear. I was a faster runner 10 years ago, but maybe I can get back to that form.

      Cheers!

  4. Consider the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon during the first weekend of October. Some call it the most beautiful urban marathon in the country. It starts in downtown Minneapolis then takes you through the chain of lakes to the finish line in St. Paul. You even get a free Summit beer at the end! In full disclosure, my wife and I ran the 10 mile last year and they didn’t have Summit EPA (boo!).

Another one is the Detroit Free Press Marathon in mid-October. The course takes you through the Detroit-Windsor tunnel. I don’t know much about this one, including whether you need your passport before or during the race…

The Chicago Marathon is just very busy.

Fall is the most common time for U.S. marathons; spring is more common in Europe. There are fewer races other times of year but you can find some good ones (e.g., Grandma’s, Houston, St. George).

    • TC was my top choice, but I don’t think my wife wants to make the 10+ hour drive when there are closer options.

We’ll make the call in August, but we’re leaning towards either the international one in Detroit or one in Grand Rapids (where we have family) on the same weekend.

      Cheers!

    • Nice! I’ve been to some good breweries in both Holland and GR. And if I’m committing to running 26.2 miles, I’m not committing to a month of sobriety that same month. 🙂

      Thank you for the info!

      Cheers!
