The Sunday Best (8/8/2021)

The_Sunday_Best_2021

The Sunday Best is a collection of articles I’ve curated from the furthest reaches of the internet for your reading pleasure.

Every week, I scan hundreds of headlines, read dozens of posts, and bring you the best of the best to save you time and mental energy.

Financial Independence (FI) is a primary focus, but it’s an awfully broad topic. I tend to approach FI and early retirement from a fatFIRE perspective and through the lens of a physician, so expect to see those biases in the selected articles.

Related topics that have become recurrent themes include early retirement, selective frugality, tax issues, travel, physician issues, and of course, investing.

For more great articles, take a peek at The Sunday Best Archives. Now let’s get to the best… The Sunday Best!

It’s Good to Be Home

We somehow survived more than two weeks in the belly of the COVID beast that is Florida right now without contracting the disease. It certainly helps that 3 out of 4 in my family are vaccinated.

I did get a bit of a summer cold, and my boys each had the same symptoms a few days after me and a few days apart. We all took COVID tests just to be on the safe side, even my asymptomatic wife, and all 4 of us tested negative. Uff da.

It’s starting to feel like no place is perfectly safe, and we know of a number of young children in our community — friends of friends — who are sick and tested positive. It’s a shame this highly contagious Delta variant couldn’t have held off until the kids had a chance to be vaccinated. But here we are.

Nevertheless, it’s good to be home. In outdoor settings, we’ve been able to see family again. My wife and boys ran a 6k today (yes, 6 kilometers — don’t ask), and all came home with medals for their age group. Between the 3 of them, we took home gold, silver, and bronze! I’m still not back to running due to nagging ball-of-foot issues, but now that we’re home, I’m back on the spin bike regularly.

Speaking of Gold Medals, the Olympics wrap up today, and the USA will easily have the most medals overall by a count of 113 to 88, and we edged out China for the most gold medals, 39 to 38.

There was one Gold Medal that had me jumping and hollering, not believing what I had just witnessed. I honestly haven’t been this excited over the outcome of a sporting event since Stefon Diggs’ Minnesota Miracle.

This was the Miracle on the Mat, with Minnesota’s own Gable Steveson scoring not one, but two takedowns on the three-time world champion heavyweight wrestler from Georgia in the final 10 seconds. The statistical odds of victory when down 8-5 as time is expiring have to be infinitesimally small, but our guy defied the odds.

The final 23 seconds:

Keep grinding, keep hustling, never say never, and watch what happens.

  3. Thank you for the shout out this week, POF. And for the helpful comment on not-yet-accounted for costs–I think my step son will be independent, but I do think my niece and nephews may need some extra college funding in a few years. We will see.

  4. Thanks POF for featuring an article of mine.

My family came back from a trip from Florida mid July as well and fortunately did not have an issues with Delta (all of us were vaccinated). We went to Disney and Universal and pretty much everyone at that point (including us) did not have a mask on. It felt like the first taste of freedom in a long time and thought things would turn for the better but I guess not.

    • Yes unfortunately Florida’s cases are spiking again. I live there, and like you was just starting to enjoy a feeling of freedom, especially since my knees are better; now I am back to my old COVID protocols… no in-restaurant meals, curbside pickup where available, no store visits except for essential goods. Amazon Prime has been handy for purchasing supplies and toys for the kittens and various repair parts for farm equipment.

I was hoping to take a vacation this fall now that I am fully retired. I may have to settle for horse camping, which isn’t the worst thing in the world and something I’ve not been able to do for a couple of years.
